Micro-Milling Process of Metals: A Comparison between Femtosecond Laser and EDM Techniques

Nowadays, micro-machining techniques are commonly used in several industrial fields, such as automotive, aerospace and medical. Different technologies available, the choice must be made considering many factors, type of machining, number lots required accuracy specifications terms geometrical tolerances surface finish. Lasers electric discharge machining (EDM) widely to produce micro-components similarly unconventional thermal technologies. In general, a laser is particularly appreciated by industry for excellent speeds possibility machine essentially any materials. EDM, on other hand, has poor material removal rate (MRR) but can microparts only electrically conductive workpieces, reaching high realizing steep walls. The most common micro-application both drilling they make also milling operations. this work, comparison femto-laser EDM was focusing micro-milling. Two features were selected comparison: micro-channels micro-pillars. depth varied two levels features. As workpiece material, aluminum, stainless steel titanium alloy tested. Data regarding process performance characteristics analyzed. results obtained with compared. This work improves knowledge micro-manufacturing processes help characterization their capabilities.
